Modern furniture designers often use bolsters in the bedding design. Bolsters are light weight foam based pillows, often cut into wedge shapes. If you gracefully curve a bolster you get a sleigh like effect, and if it is straightened it looks more platform like. Italian and US contemporary furniture designers, influenced by modernists, Japan, and Art Deco, have created master pieces of simplicity. Comfort and coziness are not the defining factors but rather fine lines. Choosing to enjoy graphical lines and architecture is the signature of the contemporary designer.
Proportion considerations: Take note that contemporary designers use lines close to the floor yet noticeably detached from it. Framed platforms raised slightly off the floor and captioned by a low rising headings casts shadows -- lines near the bed onto the adjacent floor and walls. Though no frills are evident the right materials dress up the bed set and the architectural details finish the ensemble. Too high off the floor and they look like stilts, to low and they loose the architectural value. This art form is about balance. Balancing lines against light, lines against proportion.
